CRMS sends kids to Japan
Since 1997, Camden-Rockport Middle School has sponsored a unique exchange program with the school board of Hirakawa in Aomori Prefecture, Japan.
In April of 2016, along with two school chaperones, ten of us (randomly drawn from eighth grade hopefuls) had an amazing opportunity to travel to Japan as goodwill ambassadors representing our school and the state of Maine. We were immersed in Japanese culture and daily life, gained new perspectives and confidence as we established cultural connections with our Japanese peers. We’ll spent the first three days exploring metropolitan Tokyo’s historic sights, museums, and temples. Then we spent eight days in rural Hirakawa, experiencing a more intimate view of Japanese life as we visited schools, made daily excursions to local attractions while each staying with a multi-generational host family. We participated in a formal tea ceremony, meditated, and learned a little calligraphy. We were very fortunate to arrive just in time for Japan’s famous cherry blossoms in bloom!
